Introduction DPL = DoT Power Levelling What's DPL ? Basically you will enter an instance with two characters, an high level one and the one you want to DPL. You will aggro a bunch of mobs with the high level one, DOT them and leave the instance before they die. The low level character will be alone in the instance when the mobs die and therefore will get 100% Xp. 2. /Played Time First you have to be carefull with the /Played time concept. It's by no way a "real life" time. You have to consider that it's not accurate, it keeps on adjusting, but not regularly. You also have to understand that by using these kind of instance levelling methods, you often have to log out and wait for the instance to be accessible again, when you reset it too often. So you will NEVER be able to start a character and then get it to 40 in 12 hours in real life. You will spend 10 hours on your character, but not straight. 3. Requirements Two Accounts : For this method to work, you need two accounts. But in opposition to the AOE Frost mage method, you can manage everything on your own if you have two computers. It's also possible to get it to work alone with one computer, using Alt-TAB or windowed mode, but it will be really harder. A 70 Shadow priest on one account : Okay... warlocks' dots are great, and this method is still viable using one. But it will be really more efficient with a shadow priest, at least for the levels 8 to 40. Instant dots with no line of sight needed, bubbles and Resurrection are the three main things that gets me the favor of the Shadow Priest. Resurection will be highly important and you know why ? Because your low level character WILL definitely die, and it may happens quite often ! Resurrection will then make you gain a lot of time, making your death almost insignificant ![]() The character you are gonna level will obviously be on the second account. Optionnal : A Mage on one of your accounts as you will need A LOT of water. 4. General Method As explained in the introduction, the method is quite simple. Step 1: Enter the instance with your two characters. Be sure that the shadow priest has full mana/life. Step 2: Move your low level character a bit away from the instance entrance. Step 3: Take your shadow priest and go aggro 4 to 7 mobs by DoTing them with Shadow word pain (see below for spell levels) so that it takes them down to 10% HP Step 4: Run to the instance entrance Step 5: Bubble your low level character Step 6: Dot all the mobs: that's where you'll have to be quick. Change selection using TAB and dot them by spamming your DoT hotkey. Step 7a: Leave the instance and begin to drink/eat as soon as possible Step 7b: While leaving the instance with the priest, start to run with your low level character as the bubble will often not be enough to keep you alive Step 8: Get XP, reenter with your shadow priest and start again from step 1 5. A specific example : A Shadow priest DPLing a Warlock from 1 to 40 in 12 hours and 20 minutes I DPLed this character specifically for this guide ! I'm quite satisified with the /Played time I got even if I made some mistake and believe it can still be improved ! I DPLed two characters before this one to be sure and get the best possible from this method. So, here is the result ![]() The shadow priest was a very average one, only two epics, around +450 to spell damage. So you will ahve to adapt the DoT you will be using if you have more or less spell damage. By the way, I apologized as I don't have screenshot for levels 1 to 10. 1 to 8 because I didn't think it was interresting and 9 and 10 as I was not taking them correctly. By the time I understood I was not hitting the right screenshot hotkey (Yeah... what a shame...) I was already 11. So you will only have progression screenshots from level 11 to 35. ************************************************** LEVEL 1 to 8 - Quests, overall time : 1h38 ************************************************** LEVEL 8 to 14 - RFC, overall time : 2h56 General Details : Number of pulls before reset : 2 to 4 pulls depending on your level, 5 to 6 mobs each time DoT used : SWP2 to pull, then SWP2 to kill Comment : There will be Healers there (chamans) They are NOT worth your time, OS them with Shadow word death or they will start healing themselves and the other mobs, ruining your strategy. Levelling details: Level 8 to 9 : 128xp to 180xp / mob ; 16 min to level ; 4 pulls - Level 9 to 10: 135xp to 150xp / mob ; 16 min to level ; 4 pulls - Level 10 to 11: 135xp to 150xp / mob ; 16 min to level ; 3 pulls - Screenshot Level 11 to 12: 135xp to 150xp / mob ; 16 min to level ; 3 pulls - Screenshot Level 12 to 13: 135xp to 150xp / mob ; 13 min to level ; 2 pulls - Screenshot Level 13 to 14: 135xp to 150xp / mob ; 11 min to level ; 2 pulls - Screenshot ************************************************** LEVEL 14 to 17 - Wailing Caverns, overall time : 3h59 General Details : Number of pulls before reset : 4 to 2 pulls, 5 to 6 mobs each time DoT used : SWP3 to pull, then SWP2 to kill Comment : There will be druids and some kind of ectoplams. Once again they are not worth your time. Shadow word pain 10 on them and they will be memories. Levelling details: Level 14 to 15: 128xp to 180xp / mob ; 22 min to level ; 4 pulls - Screenshot Level 15 to 16: 135xp to 150xp / mob ; 23 min to level ; 2 pulls - Screenshot Level 16 to 17: 135xp to 150xp / mob ; 18 min to level ; 2 pulls - Screenshot ************************************************** LEVEL 17 to 20 - Shadowfang K. , overall time : 4h52 General Details : Number of pulls before reset : 3 pulls, 5 to 6 mobs each time DoT used : SWP2 to pull, then SWP7 to kill (SWP2/SWP6 also viable but more risky) Comment : No healers there !!! Just enjoy ![]() Levelling details: Level 17 to 18: 170xp to 180xp / mob ; 20 min to level ; 3 pulls - Screenshot Level 18 to 19: 170xp to 180xp / mob ; 19 min to level ; 3 pulls - Screenshot Level 19 to 20: 165xp to 175xp / mob ; 14 min to level ; 3 pulls - Screenshot ************************************************** LEVEL 20 to 31 - Scarlet Monastery - Library , overall time : 8h34 General Details : Number of pulls before reset : around 6 pulls (you can do more or less before a reset depending on your liking), 5 to 6 mobs each time DoT used : SWP7 to pull, then SWP7 to kill Comment : One of the best instance to DPL. Lots of mobs in the instance beginning which is really great. But... healers are back. Kill them as quickly as possible while pulling. You can alternate Libreary with armory, but well, I prefer starting armory at level 31. I also noticed that Cathedral is absolutely worthless. Mobs are harder to kill and will randomly only give half xp. But well, you can give it a try ! Another important thing is that here, mobs are running when they have low HP ! And this is just fantastic. After you have dotted them for the second time at the instance entrance, just wait with your shadow priest for the first mob to run away and then leave the instance ! Other mobs will start to also run away really soon and you possibly won't have to even move an inch with your low level char as they won't even try to touch you ! Levelling details: Level 20 to 21: ~ 470xp / mob ; 23 min to level ; 6 pulls - Screenshot Level 21 to 22: ~ 480xp / mob ; 16 min to level ; 6 pulls - Screenshot Level 22 to 23: ~ 502xp / mob ; 25 min to level ; 6 pulls - Screenshot Level 23 to 24: ~ 520xp / mob ; 15 min to level ; 6 pulls - Screenshot Level 24 to 25: ~ 535xp / mob ; 22 min to level ; 6 pulls - Screenshot Level 25 to 26: ~ 551xp / mob ; 18 min to level ; 6 pulls - Screenshot Level 26 to 27: ~ 580xp / mob ; 14 min to level ; 6 pulls - Screenshot Level 27 to 28: ~ 600xp / mob ; 24 min to level ; 6 pulls - Screenshot Level 28 to 29: ~ 616xp / mob ; 28 min to level ; 6 pulls - Screenshot Level 29 to 30: ~ 616xp / mob ; 21 min to level ; 6 pulls - Screenshot Level 30 to 31: ~ 632xp / mob ; 16 min to level ; 6 pulls - Screenshot ************************************************** LEVEL 31 to 35 - Scarlet Monastery - Library and Armory , overall time : 9h39 General Details : Number of pulls before reset : around 5 (library) and 6 (Armory) pulls, 5 to 6 mobs each time DoT used : SWP7 to pull, then SWP7 to kill for Library - SWP8 to pull, then SWP8 to kill for Armory Comment : Same as before. In armory avoid casters, kill them (with elementals) if they aggro. Levelling details: Level 31 to 32: ~ 470xp / mob ; 19 min to level ; 5-6 pulls - Screenshot Level 32 to 33: ~ 480xp / mob ; 17 min to level ; 5-6 pulls - Screenshot Level 33 to 34: ~ 502xp / mob ; 15 min to level ; 5-6 pulls - Screenshot Level 34 to 35: ~ 520xp / mob ; 14 min to level ; 5-6 pulls - Screenshot ************************************************** LEVEL 35 to 40 - ZF , overall time : 12h20 ! Comment: I tried ZF with my other characters while trying to figure out the best DPLing method. My general feeling about it is uncertain. Inside mount is great for pulling, mobs xp is quite good to (around 800/900xp per mob) but well, you just can't pull 6 mobs at a time with an average shadow priest. I'll add the last details soon ! 6. Tips 1. Never pull more than 6 mobs. Believe me, when you will see plenty of "600xp" popping on your screen, you WILL be tempted to pull more. But it will be a waste of your time. You may get it to work a few time, but most of the time it will end up with a mob dying while you are still in the instance, and you don't want that. It will a mob with 6 times less experience for you lower character, and totally wasted for this instance. Moreover it won't reduce the number of pulls you will do. So remember, never more than 6 mobs per pull ! 2. If you want an insane /played time just to show off, you can do what I did for this warlock. When you reach lvl 8, log off immediately and remember where you logged off. Take a mage there and make a portal to Orgrimmar. You will then be able to start RFC immediatelly, without loosing time travelling. Then each time you have to go to the next instance, just have a warlock, your priest and another friend summon your low level character in front of the next instance ! (Using Meeting stone will never work as your low level character will not meet the level requirements, that is why you'll need a lvl 20 warlock at least) 3. Stack food and water ! Try to find a mage that can make you tons of Food and Water and stock it in your bank, it will not disappear when you logout (I didn't confirm that, but it should be working) You will really need it when starting SM. 4. When you can't enter an instance anymore, or want to take a break, don't disconnect your low character using ALT+F4. It will stay connected a little more than 20 sec. Disconnect it normally to get the best of your /played time 5. Once again, don't loose time : do not buy your low level character skills and do not stuff it. You won't need it using this method. There may be some exceptions: Paladin bubbles, Rogue evasions, Warlock's void walker sacrifice, priest bubble etc... may be very useful to avoid death using DPLing method. I'm still writing a specific section for Paladin DPLing. 6. Don't hesitate to leave the instance with your two characters if the pull goes nasty... If you failed dotting all the mob, or pulled half the instance, don't try to save the day. Just leave with your two characters. It's better to have to do the pull again than to waste 6 preciouuuus mobs. 7. If your low level character dies, just resurrect it with your Priest.... .... ... Who said obvious ??? 8. More to come... 7. Conclusion I hope you will all be able to level your character as quicly as this one ! Moreover, patch 2.3 is comming, meaning it will be even faster ! Maybe i'll do another guide then ![]() |
