Wait, I thought ITALY and ARGENTINA were the only teams who liked to take lots of dives.
Plenty of gamesmanship to go around in this one. Best one: Fernando getting his cheek caressed by Vieira and going to ground in agony. Aragones off his bench in mock outrage, being shushed by the French midfielder. Would've been nice to have a voiceover translator for that exchange.
Still, you have to pity Spain. So, so much talent, again. They win their group, which is supposed to sort of grease the skids in the Round of 16. But SWITZERLAND wins THEIR group, so Spain gets a just-waking-from-slumber France.
After Zidane's rocky year, it was great to see that smile of joy at the end. What an exhilarating, classy goal. Better than the one he scored for his swan song at Madrid.
Spain didn't play badly, but France played pretty great. If only England could start making some diagonal runs, too. Ribery man of the match.

After watching several French games, this is my conclusion. They have the offense and diffense to play well against Brazil. Spain's offense looked very ordinary against French defense. They are a well rounded team with high quality players that are just old. That could be good or bad I guess. The difference between this team and the 98 team is Ribery and Henry. Also Trezeguet who is sitting. I think they should let Ribery run the show. He clearly showed the world what he can do today.
If France can beat Brazil, which I predict, they can say that they own Brazil. Wow. But that's as far as they will go. Too old to win the whole thing.
And I think Puyol didn't foul Henry. It didn't look so bad to me. If the ref is going to call that, he should call foul on just about every play. Come on. It's a man's game. Maybe I'm biased because Puyol is one of my favorite players. I will forever remember Henry as just another great player who is also great in acting.
I think Spain should have started Joquin. He was the only one who could create anything with his bursting speed. I saw him in 2002 and was very impressed. Looks a lot better than Torres to me. He almost scored one today and that could have made the difference.
