Sprite - Welcome to another great Stratics house of commons with the developers of the Lord of the Rings Online! There is no specific topic for tonight's chat, so all questions are welcome. Sprite - Please send those questions to [QT]Legender - to do so type /msg [QT]Legender My question here. Please only send questions to our QT's as those sent to myself or the developers will not make it into the lineup. Sprite - The full logs will be posted on http://www.stratics.com/content/portals/me/index.php after the chat. We'll begin with a quick intro from our guests...now would be a good time to send in those questions! RingLeader - Hey everyone! Jeffrey Steefel here, Exec. Producer of LOTRO. Thanks for coming out to chat with us tonight... Annuvin - Greetings all, Annuvin here. Annuvin - I'm the Design Director for Lord of the Rings. Annuvin - My hobbies include, sleeping late, playing with my dog, and repressing Mithril_Miser! Scenario - Hey there - I'm Scenario. I'm a member of the World Building team. I'm one of the bunch responsible for crafting the landscape and populating it with all manner of scary things. LOTRO_Patience - Hi guys! Thanks for coming tonight. I'm Meghan "Patience" Rodberg, the Community Manager for LOTRO. I live to annoy Annuvin and Ringleader with impossible demands on tight deadlines. Sprite - *aravorn* When will eastern angmar open? Will it be available before open beta? Annuvin - Eastern Angmar will open "when it's ready". Annuvin - (You can expect it to be open on our preview World, but not in the general Open Beta... We have to have some secrets, folks!) Sprite - *Whisper_* I would like more information on the Pre-order Lifetime Founder's Option. Is explicitly logging in to my Account and cancelling by subscription the only way I could loose my Lifetime Membership? If I take an extened leave from the game, would I still have my Lifetime account when I return? LOTRO_Patience - Hiya, Whisper! LOTRO_Patience - As long as you don't do anything to get yourself banned from the game (see the Code of Conduct and Terms of Service to find out how! ![]() Sprite - *SteelMonkey82* Hi, I was curious about the PvP system in the game, besides dueling. Will there be large scale PvP, race vs race or nation vs nation? The game is stunning, and that PvP would look so much nicer with the games engine * LOTRO_Patience hears Annuvin typing madly. Annuvin - Ahh... PvP. We currently have no plans to allow the Free people of middle earth to "stab" each other. Annuvin - We are fully committed to making sure that Monster Play becomes our PvP (Or PvMP) solution, as it not only allows for anyone to PvP(MP) competitively, but is also in-line with the War of the Ring. Annuvin - As it stands, Combat in the Ettenmoors can get very large scale! (ask anyone that's participated in a keep siege) Sprite - *Loup* Can we have some more infos about what it is planned for housing(players and/or guilds housing)? Annuvin - Housing is something we're looking into (just had a meeting about it last week, actually). Annuvin - Suffice to say, we want to do both. (special kinship housing, and low apr affordable housing for the masses) Annuvin - I'd really love to give you more details, but I don't want to run the risk of being wrong. (my ego is fairly fragile) Annuvin - Expect more on this in the upcoming months. Sprite - For those of you just joining us, there is no specific topic for tonight, so all questions are welcome. Sprite - Please send your questions to [QT]Legender, questions sent to myself or the devs will not make it into the lineup. Sprite - *jl* will there be more varied quests in the gold version considering most of us have seen our fair shair of pigs so far? RingLeader - jl, I'd be interested to know what level you've gotten to so far. As you get farther along in the game, you'll find yourself in some pretty interesting adventures, both solo and with others. RingLeader - And as you get closer to Angmar, you're not likely to see any pigs, but you'll have plenty to deal with RingLeader - Also, remember that there are hundreds of "Deeds" thyat take you on multiple objectives over time all over Middle-earth. Sprite - *Koolaider* I've pretty much been sold with the new Monster Play feature that was added to the game. I was wondering what can we expect with Monster Play as we get closer to launch? Annuvin - As we get closer to launch, you can expect some changes that make Destiny points more accessible to players. Annuvin - As far as modifying the monster abilities, there will be numerous balance tweaks between now and launch, but our main priority is stability. Annuvin - We have a lot of ground to cover until we're ready for launch, so it is unlikely you'll see any major new systems come online. (such as housing, for example) Sprite - *Phoxx* What are some examples of the professions in LOTRO, and what makes them so helpful? Annuvin - Professions in LOTRO are all over the map. Some good ones are the Armsman (focuses on making stuff), the Explorer (focuses on retrieving stuff), and the Scholar (focuses in forgotten lore). Annuvin - Professions can make things that simply can't be obtained through any other method, and their work is the highest quality you can find in Middle-Earth. Annuvin - One example would be the Scholar's ability to make Starglass, an item that boosts your hope. (negating Dread, a necessity for fighting the more potent minons of Sauron) Sprite - *monster* Will there be monster play in Open Beta? Also can I get invited if I havne't pre-ordered? RingLeader - Open Beta starts for pre-order folks on 3/30 and will open to the public on 4/6. And there will absolutely be Monster PLay in Open Beta! There's no LOTRO w/o Monster Play ![]() Sprite - *ObsidianCrow* The chance to play a monster is a great addition. I was thrilled to see that this was added. Will there be an expansion on this option? Will there eventualy be more areas in which we can choose to play monsters? I am putting in my vote for more oportunities in this area! * LOTRO_Patience swears Annuvin is typing War and Peace. RingLeader - With 1 finger Annuvin - It's funny you should ask, ObsidianCrow! We plan on putting a lot more weight behind monster play... After all, this era of Middle-Earth is defined by the War of the Ring! Annuvin - Expect more on this later, as Campaigns will be front and center when it comes to allowing more freedom to monster players. Annuvin - All these critics... Note: They aren't answering any questions at all. Who loves you? Annuvin - ![]() Sprite - *Loup* Do you plan to add some landmass in regular patchs or only with expansion pack? RingLeader - As with all Turbine games, we plan to add content to the game aggressively. The world will expand as time goes on and you won't have to wait for an expansion for it! We're already working on post-launch content. We have a HUGE world to explore - it'll take years - YAY!!! RingLeader - This has always been one of the coolest things about LOTR and Middle-earth - there is so much to work with that the possibilities are endless. Sprite - *LuthienElensar* My question is: Will the insta lvl be brought back for the "founders"? I apparently missed my chance to check out Monster Play - and would fancy the option to take the lazy way "in". LOL Thanks! LOTRO_Patience - Hola Luthien! Sorry, but the insta-levels are out of the game now. You can still check out monster play at level 10 (to play a monster) and level 40 to play PvMP as a player character, but you have to earn your way there. ![]() Sprite - *Gambit92* Will weapons be able to be upgraded with additional visual effects? Like fire arrows, or magical effects like that? Annuvin - We actually have a few objects in game that currently modify weapon damage. In terms of upgrading our current weapons, there are a few options available. Annuvin - Currently, we don't allow you to switch weapon cosmetics, though it is something we are looking into. Annuvin - There are quite a few weapons that have visual fx, ranging from our bane weapons (similar to sting, with the glowing when enemies are near) to our more over the top fx. Sprite - *Steakman* how long will the current closed beta be on until open beta starts, will there be some planned weeks of downtime anytime soon? RingLeader - Weeks of Downtime? No Way...even as we move from Closed Beta to open Beta we'll be down as little as possible. As far as we're concerned, the LOTRO community is well underway and we want to keep building and growing. Sprite - *NightmareChild* I see that you have moved mounts up to release, which is a good thing, but from what i can tell there is no mounted combat, so i was wondering if sometime in the future we will see mounted combat or if it is already there in some sort of form? RingLeader - We're really excited about the mounts we have in the game right now. RingLeader - They're beatiful and really fun to ride. RingLeader - As with everything, we want to add things into the game that are working well, and that make sense for the current state of the game. RingLeader - So when the time comes for mounted combat (and it will) we want to make sure it is fun, responsive and a killer addition. RingLeader - There are certainly places in Middle-earth (can you say Rohan) that might be appropriate. Sprite - *FoxFire* Is there any possibility that the release date could slip? LOTRO_Patience - Hello FoxFire. Let me put it like this: Is there a possibility an asteroid could hit your house? Well, yeah... but it doesn't keep you awake at night. We're very confident of hitting our release date, and I think our beta players, who are out posting everywhere today, will say we're right. ![]() Sprite - *Steakman* when do you announce the winnters of the stress test event? LOTRO_Patience - Steakman! Hi. We'll announce the winners in the next couple of weeks. ![]() Sprite - *Willot* Ive seen alot of posts stating from Beta players that they dont believe there s enough differences between players f the same class. One captain is pretty muc the same as another. Is this still being worked on? Annuvin - Class differentiation is big thing for us. Our Trait system allows us to continually add new elements to our game post ship, heaping on more options than you can shake a stick at. Annuvin - We're currently working on finding a way to push all of the options that classes can pursue to players, since it's currently hidden (mostly because it can be overwhelming) Annuvin - Suffice to say, you can expect some cyclical revamps of classes in the near future, with an eye towards giving them more options. Sprite - *The_Dave* Much of LOTR books and what makes them so great is all the lore and history in the books, the songs, and the rhymes. Now Being in the beta i know there is tons to do and so many qests. What is in the future for History about the world, all the stories, Songs, and lore! so that we can completely live the experience you have created for us! RingLeader - Hmmm. The Future for History...::scratches head:: We're actually always conscious of the history of Middle-earth, whether it's looking up lore in the integrated online compendium of Tolkien Lore, or walking across the ancient ruins of Arnor. You'll be treading lightly to ambush Orcs as you climb the path up Weathertop like many before you. RingLeader - Imagine visiting the Forge where the One Ring was made, or walking the hallowed halls of Elronds Hall of Fire - YOU WILL! RingLeader - As for song, you can play music with others in the world, and in harmony - you can already see people in front of the Prancing Pony strumming out songs now and then... RingLeader - And of course, you'll be making your own lore..... Sprite - *Aemilae* For Patience.... I read in your post on the forums that for those of us that got Stress Test invites would be graduated to closed beta. I got my ST invite but my client says "closed" for all servers... any ideas? LOTRO_Patience - Hiya Aemilae. You had to have registered your stress test key during the stress test. The key isn't valid if it was registered too late. Sorry. ![]() Sprite - *ijin* Do you think the first addon will be after more than 6 months? Hope not after 1 year... Annuvin - Ahh, the vagaries of the written language. By Add-on do you mean: Annuvin - Patch? - Chances are, we'll have patches during our Open beta. So, expect some of those coming down the pipe! Annuvin - Content Update? - We're Turbine! You can expect some robust content updates as soon as the 1 month patch. Annuvin - Expansion pack? - Hrm. I don't think I can say anything here. I'll leave that to RingLeader. Sprite - *Appiah* Are there any plans to add Fishing to the game? Annuvin - Plans... Yes, we'd like to add more vocations to our game. It really comes down to making sure they are interesting Annuvin - and dovetail well with the rest of our vocations. Needless to say, I can't give you a date on that one... But I can say that Annuvin - you can get us to add more vocations by using a lot of existing professions! Our Data mining software will reveal that you Annuvin - really want fishing. (and aren't just saying you want it) Sprite - *H4x0ticu5* Hello. I'd like to know how exactly the rest system works. I log in after a night of sleep and my entire bar is blue. I see no difference between actual exp gain and not-yet gained rest xp. Am I missing something? Annuvin - Hah! Funny thing about that. You aren't missing anything at all... It is we who missed something! (triumphant reveal) Annuvin - The bars will be different colors in future update, showing your base exp, and having a different color for your bonus exp. Annuvin - Currently it only shows blue, which means you're rested, and it also fills the full amount, concealing your current exp. Annuvin - Two words: Non, Optimal. Sprite - *Phoxx* Are there going to be class specific quests? Annuvin - Yes. We currently have quite a few class specific quests. Some of them take place in instances, designed to show you Annuvin - how awesome your class is. Sprite - *Freja* A question about the music score for the release. Stylistically, will it be fully orchestrated and bombastic or more light and subtle? (Think LotR Movie Music vs Music of the Animation for LotR) RingLeader - The music in LOTRO is very diverse, to reflect the diversity of the work and the adventure. Some parts are highly orchestral, and others are as simple as a mandolin in a tavern. The goal was to create themes for places as well as for moments. So when you get into it with a nsaty mob, the music will get darker. In the Shire, there is a sense of play and peaceful existence. A great deal of the music was composed and per RingLeader - A great deal of the music was composed and performed in-house and we're really proud of what has been created. RingLeader - ...sorry 'bout that ![]() Sprite - *Sketchy* How advanced will Name filters be, to prevent people for creating an army of Gandalf, Legolas, and Aragon clones? RingLeader - We've spent a fair amount of time on the naming filters. RingLeader - Obviously we don't want Frodos and Gandalfs flitting all about the place. RingLeader - We also want Middle-earth to be a welcoming place so there are the expected vulgarity filters. RingLeader - We do the best we can, but obviously you can always get creative if you want to... RingLeader - But that's what GM's are for ![]() Sprite - *RadioactiveWabbit* What are the differences between deeds, accomplishments, titles and traits and are traits the only way of advancing your character? Annuvin - Deeds - What your character does. Every character has a "Deed Log" which lists out their personal achievements. Completing them can grant Annuvin - you titles, or traits Annuvin - Accomplishments - See Deeds (above) Annuvin - Titles - These are equippable surnames that allow you to display your achievements to the world. They are often stylized to the deed used Annuvin - to unlock them (re: Brigand slayers get "Watcher of Roads") Annuvin - Traits - These are heroic characteristics that you can equip (similar to equipment). There are 4 types of traits: Virtue, Race, Class, Legendary Annuvin - Traits are just one of the methods of advancement within Lord of the Rings. If you wanted to, I can imagine that you level to max without Annuvin - getting one trait, though it would be hard. And probably unrewarding. Sprite - *Druc* Any chance the founders will get a sneak peak, maybe a weekend stress test prior to the open beta? * LOTRO_Patience wears "Patience the Purifier" with pride. LOTRO_Patience - Hi Druc. A weekend? Hmmm. LOTRO_Patience - How about a whole week? Pre-order customers, aka Founders, get the entire week of March 30-April 6 to play before open beta. ![]() Sprite - *JMForsberg* The games looks great and plays well all. What can we expect in the future as far as the storyline goes? Are you severly limited in the story you can tell based on the LotR main storyline? RingLeader - We have a lot of exciting things planned for the story and the way it continues to weave into the story of the LOTR. We have a fair amount of flexibility as long as we are working well within the "rules" of the lore. RingLeader - Tolkien Enterprises has been great about this and we have taken great care to make good use of that priviledge. RingLeader - After all, the Rise of Angmar in the THird Age is a new storyline, and there is much more where that came from. RingLeader - All while we take you through the era and story timeline of the Ringbearer. RingLeader - So you get a little bit of taking on Angmar, and you also get to join the Fellowship in Rivendell before the Ringbearer heads out toward Mordor. Sprite - *tithen* Speaking of stability, what are you guys take on the progress being made to stabilize the clint/servers? Annuvin - Well, on a scale of 1 to 10, we're getting closer to our achievable rating. ![]() Annuvin - All kidding aside, I know we're making great progress. We're tackling the dual headed beast of client performance (been to Bree lately?) Annuvin - and overall stability. We fix quite a few issues everyday, and Beta is a great testing ground for those fixes. Annuvin - Performance (on both sides) keeps getting better, but we are fully committed to ensuring that our Open Beta is as stable as we can get. Annuvin - (and performs well on all of our target specs) Sprite - *geeb* Are there plans to expand the closed beta before the start of open beta? LOTRO_Patience - Hey geeb, yes, we'll be continuing to invite people into the closed beta in the coming weeks. ![]() Sprite - *Phoxx* I know that the Founder system allows players to continue their characters from the Open Beta after launch, but will there be any limits as to just how far a character can get in Open Beta? Be it level restrictions or certain high level areas that are off-limit? LOTRO_Patience - Hi Phoxx ![]() LOTRO_Patience - There will be a limit to how far your character can progress in open beta, but we're still working out the details and will announce them soon. Sprite - *madmann* as far as evolving story line and content go what it the proposed schedule like for additional content, WoW took 2 years for any major new areas to discover outside dungeon content RingLeader - As Annnuvin mentioned earlier, we will be expanding the game on a fairly regular basis. You can expect to see new content as early as a month after launch. RingLeader - We really look at Launch day as Day One for the evolution of LOTRO. RingLeader - What we launch with is the platform from which we'll be building a huge community and the largest online Universe ever. RingLeader - That's when the fun really starts. Sprite - *Druc* How long do you see a typical raid lasting? Will it be closer to 1 to 2 hours or are we looking at a 5 hours six nights week type situation? Annuvin - Well, the gradations you've outlined are anywhere from 1 to 2 hours, all the way to 30 hours. I can safely say, our Raids will be Annuvin - "somewhere in between". We want to ensure that you are getting an epic experience worthy of the Lord of the Rings franchise, while Annuvin - not forcing you to resent us. So, we're shipping with global reset times on our raids, along with an eye towards making clear stop Annuvin - points within them, so you can walk away feeling like you've achieved something. Sprite - *Willot* Are there constelations of stars in the sky? Or is it just a painted skybox. I ask because certain stars in the lore of LOTR are important Scenario - The Professor made note of a number of constellations and other celestial bodies that could be found in the skies above Middle Earth. You'll be happy to know that you will be able to look up into the night sky and see those constellations in the starry night. Sprite - *NinjaG* Will pipe-weed have any effects other than blowing different types of smoke rings? Alcohol has visual effects, why not something like enhanced sensitivity to light and slow-motion on particle effects for pipe-weed? RingLeader - Hmmm..pipeweed effects? Perhaps an insatiable appetite for pies? Actually, we're going to focus pipeweed on smoke rings and other fun stuff. Try /smoke2 to see what pipeweed can really do to you if you're not careful ![]() LOTRO_Patience - (Guys.. ask more questions about the world.. give Scenario a reason to be here.. ![]() Sprite - *Jori* Are you going to ad more content to crafting? Annuvin - Oooh... An easy one! "Yes". Annuvin - We plan on adding more elements to crafting, allowing for better critical successes, and more recipe diversity. Sprite - *H4x0ticu5* Let's face it, Rangers suck. Can we just get rid of them? Annuvin - Rangers are supposed to impressive! How can you not be a fan? Annuvin - All kidding aside, you can expect our rolling storyline to be all about 'getting rid of Rangers'. Annuvin - Expect our Antagonists to follow that advice, to the letter. It's a pity they have but one life to give... Sprite - *Whisper_* Will anything that happens in the "Monster Play Zone" have any effect on the outside zones or, is it pretty much what happens in monster play, stays in monster play? RingLeader - One of the things we've talked about is Destiny Points, which you earn in the PvMP areas (among other places) and can spend outside the MP regions. RingLeader - Destiny Points are awarded at the account level, so you can use them to buy things for your Mains. RingLeader - You can for example buy "Perks" that can add buffs and such to your avatar. Sprite - *Striden* Will there be epic battles on the scale of Helms Deep type of battle? * LOTRO_Patience listens to the typing.. it's there.. ![]() RingLeader - tap, tap, tap, tap..........ding RingLeader - tap, tap, tap, tap.......ding Annuvin - We really want to push on the epic battle front for this game, as it's a major part of the the Lord of the Rings. You can expect Annuvin - that upcoming Campaigns will allow for a more 'large scale battle' experience. We really want to push the envelope there, but we Annuvin - want to ensure that the experience has solid gameplay in it as well. It won't do anyone any good if we release a large scale battle Annuvin - that's largely unplayable. Sprite - *madmann* when is the projected release date? LOTRO_Patience - Hi Madmann! Not just projected - our actual release date is April 24, 2007. ![]() Sprite - *Iydin* Have all the developers become obsessed with TOlkien lore since LOTRO? How 'into' the books have you become since this project? Scenario - Everyone on the team is certainly familiar with Tolkein's works. By virtue of working on the project, we've all learned more about Middle Earth than we knew previously. And where some of us may not be as "powerful in the lore", we do have a good number of people on the team who know the mythos almost inside out and are happy to share their knowledge amongst the rest of us (lore battles over points of lore - such as Balrogs a Scenario - And where some of us may not be as "powerful in the lore", we do have a good number of people on the team who know the mythos almost inside out and are happy to share their knowledge amongst the rest of us (lore battles over points of lore - such as Balrogs and their wings - are not uncommon events). Scenario - *cheer* go go text cut off! Sprite - *Koolaider* I know that there are some LOTR purists out there, but will there be other big story content added to the game that doesn't take place in the books? RingLeader - Koolaider, you don't have to look far...the witch king rising again in Angmar? A vast wicked area called Garth Agarwen that is never mentioned in the books... RingLeader - ...or creatures born of the Tolkien Bestiary but new to fans, like the Rogmul or the Bog Lurker? As much real lore as we have in LOTRO, there is also a great deal new to explore. Sprite - *Thorgormr* When will Rushlight, Old Toby, and Hornblower seeds make an appearance? ![]() Annuvin - You can expect more farming options in the future... We're hoping that we will eventually let our players cover Middle-earth Annuvin - in pipeweed. Then you can smoke Sauron out! (That's one big, bloodshot eye!) ![]() Sprite - That will wrap it up for tonight. I'd like to thank the developers for coming! The log for tonight's chat will be up shortly on http://www.stratics.com/content/portals/me/index.php Sprite - Thank you all for joining us! You can join #middle-earth to chat more about the game. LOTRO_Patience - Thanks everybody - don't forget to stop by lotro.com for updates on the game's progress and info on the pre-order program, and to sign up for the beta! Annuvin - Thanks all! * LOTRO_Patience waves to everyone. Scenario - Have a good evening all! LOTRO_Patience - And we'll see you back here on March 12, too! |
