Keltaras :
Right and what I fear is, with the lack of traditional quests, "getting gear/patterns/resources" will be driven by monster and resource grinds. Not Fun even in a hardcore sense. This is why I was asking for clarification.
Mats Persson:
Unless you find something more meaningful to do, you will indeed be driven by monster and resource grinds.
In this sense it's the same as in any other MMO - collect 20 apples/wolf furs/iron ore etc. You even have to go without the exclamation marks and the smoothly spoken dialog (or pages of lore) to do it. The difference is, you have a choice. You can make a living (and progress) by choosing what you like best. Harvesting, gathering, crafting, monster slaying? There's no difference, they will all pay off as long as you are ready to interact with other players.
And also, you won't have the cosy fed-ex missions that makes you go 25 meters to deliver [crap] to another npc. Who, by the way, will say "Thank you for the [crap]! My daughter is sick and I can't afford to help her. However, I have a friend in Gayville that master the arts of herbalism. Please go find the fucker, and tell him that my daughter needs a cure for her incurable disease. He will give you what I want, as he owes me one. Don't expect to be able to use those potions yourself though, as they are "quest items" and have no use except for curing my daughter, who isn't even here. And by the way, please kill at least 26 werewolves in his basement while at it. I will give you some magic virtual points that will let you grow stronger and more intelligent for doing this. Also, I will give you this weapon that is really useful, but that I cannot exchange for medicine because.. ..erm.. ..I'm supposed to give it to a hero. And as you are the 74'th hero to cure my daughter today (I know, she gets sick very often) I will give it to you, master hero!"
You are not paying anything to play the Beta, there are no subscription fee as the game is not complete.
We want you to pre-order our game, because we need to find out how many people will actually buy the game before we borrow ourselves to death. Let's face it, if we knew by now that we would "only" have 3000 players at launch, we would have to redo our calculations quite a bit. If we knew we would have 30.000 players, we would have to do it the other way. We also want you to get in and stress-test our server, and we feel that people that are actually prepared to pay money before the game is finished are in a way similar to our stock-holders and investors: they are taking a chance, and chances must be rewarded. We also think that people actually paying for the game are showing a monetary commitment and will play the Beta not just once or twice, and hopefully care enough to actually report stuff because they want their product to be good (like the long-term active forum members that really show dedication).
All in all, you are paying for the final game. You don't pay any subscription fees. Why should you order it now and not after release? We have to give you an incentive to do so, and that incentive will benefit both you and us in the ways I explained above. The limited edition is another incentive. Money wise, I don't care if you are paying to get the final game (which is what we charge you for) or if you are paying to get into Beta, if you are paying to support us, or if you are paying because you hate us and don't want people to get those spots. Those are your reasons.
If you don't like it, hell, simply wait for the official launch. I really don't understand the problem.
