While the folks at Origin Systems and their parent company Electronic Arts have been running their massively multiplayer RPG Ultima Online for several years now, they have done little else with the Ultima franchise except release expansion packs to the online game. The last single player Ultima RPG, Ultima IX: Ascension, was shipped several years ago in a horribly buggy state and a planned full-fledged sequel to Ultima Online was cancelled as well because Origin and EA didn’t want to take any players from their original game.

Earlier tonight, however, the Ultima franchise got a big re-launch at a media and fan event in San Francisco’s Yurba Buena Center for the Arts as Origin and EA finally revealed what had been rumored for months; an all new massively multiplayer RPG titled Ultima X: Odyssey. Origin head man Andy Hollis made the official announcement to a packed house of media, fans and retailers and we got to see the first gameplay footage (as well as some pre-rendered CGI cut scenes) from the game.

The gameplay footage clearly showed that Ultima X will be powered by Epic’s Unreal engine (indeed, Epic’s Tim Sweeny and Mark Rein also were there at the launch event last night) with some awesome looking outdoor environments across a wide range of setting (forest, snow, and more). The character models in the game are also highly details but what was most impressive in the gameplay footage is the fact that this game will be very action oriented with player character going up against large and varied enemies, from two headed ogres to sexy looking female demo types and more.

We also got to see some video interview footage mixed with more gameplay footage as members of the Origin team developing Ultima X talked about how exciting it was to make a massively multiplayer game that was described as a “sister” game to Ultima Online. The dev team promised that players will not have to worry about using macros in the game or beating up on tiny rats just to level up at the beginning.

After the film presentation, we got a chance to chat with Hollis briefly about the game. Hollis said that Ultima X will not compete directly with Ultima Online for players as they are planning for a different gameplay experience, more like what a single player RPG might be like compared to Ultima Online. Hollis also said that the footage that we saw last night was about four weeks old and that the game has come together a lot more since then. Hollis dodged our question about where in the Ultima continuity does Ultima X take place (he said he would talk about that tomorrow) and also refused to give out a release date for the game (he wouldn’t even state what year it would be released).

This article is meant to be a bit of a teaser for you readers because tomorrow is when we and the rest of the assembled mass will get a chance to see the latest build of the game and actually get to play some of it for ourselves (they are even staging a Ultima X PvP tournament today as well) We will also get a much better chance to chat with the Origin team to get more info on the next game in the Origin franchise. Stay tuned to this bat-channel for more about Ultima X.

"Hollis reiterated that Origin isn't going to work on anything that competes with Ultima Online."

Donc effectivement, il y a des chances que le gameplay des deux soit très différent, et complémentaire.

Le concept fait effectivement penser à ce de Garriott pour Tabula Rasa :P
