"And you will note that I do not show Lineage: The Blood Pledge on this graph. Why? Well, two main reasons. First, it would completely dwarf the other MMOGs, distorting the graph and making visual comparisons much more difficult. But more importantly, because the way Lineage counts a player is quite different. The may have close to 4 million “subscribers”, but most of these players did not buy a box at the local software store and then pay a monthly subscription fee like traditional MMOGs. Instead, they play in “PC baangs”, Internet cybercafes in Korea that buy Lineage access from the company and then sell it at hourly rates to customers. This, combined with the unusual Korean dynamic of rapid deployment of broadband and the fact that imports of Japanese console platforms were restricted, made Lineage unusually popular. Lineage’s lack of success in the United States via the more “traditional” MMOG model only proves this out. Now, I have nothing personal against Lineage… but trying to compare it to other MMOGs is almost like comparing apples to oranges. Interestingly, according to a talk at this year’s GDC, approximately 50% of Lineage subscribers now access the game on their PC at home, paying a flat monthly fee like other MMOGs. I might reconsider graphing Lineage in the future, if they can come up with a way of counting subscribers in the same way the other MMOGs do."
