Let's see.

A Spitfire Vb with 2 x 20mm Hispano cannon (120 RPG) and 4 x .303 machine guns (half what you have now) that sports 300 odd HP more than the old Ia did, in an airframe/wingloading package little changed so that it still dogfights about as tightly. Slight weight gain, but like all Spitfires, carried so well a lot of pilots didn't feel it much.

A Bf109 that loses 1 x 20mm cannon, gains way better gun ballistics (higher Mv and RoF AND centreline mounted) and has climbrate like a monkey on steroids chasing Fay Wrey up the Empire State. It weighs a bit more, starts to push in the turns a little more (excess thrust) compared to the earlier E model, but is signifigantly faster in level flight too. It's still the performance king here, but the Spit Vb is right on it's tail most of the way.

Then there's the Hurricane IIc. Pretty much the same as the Ia but has 4 x 20mm cannon and 300HP (rough guess, no data here at home, all at the office) to keep it in the fight a little longer and so not as easy to drop it off as the poor old Ia is. Put on a little weight like everything else did, so it's still pretty slow. Snapshot king of them all, make no mistake.

The Bf110C-4/B gets the "N" development of the DB-601 so it picks up a slight increase in performance, but extra weight robbed it of a lot of the potential since it doesn't carry it as well as some other planes would because it ain't a very clean airframe.

I predict a lot of Axis pilots will prefer the 109E in the type of dogfights they tend to engage in. It's better at the pure "yank it around" World War One style of combat than the 109F is. You want to beat everyone in a 109F you can do it easily, but you have to fly it in a slightly narrower envelope than the 109E, and if you do, it is untouchable. Get it outside that envelope, and you might be in trouble with 20mm cannons and turnrate waiting to snag yer arse. This of course applies to the 109E as well. The smart 109 pilots use vertical moves and climb when staying alive in the 109E. They will still be doing that in the 109F, but with snapshot kings weilding 20mm hangin in the hood, that turn like Hurricanes and Spitfires do .. they won't be taking the liberties they seem to do a lot of the time in 1940.

It's going to be very interesting to watch how things pan out.

En tout cas wait and see....
