We all gave definitions of immersion and talked about the relationship between the game itself and immersion. But there is the other side of immersion, from the gamers' point of view - the use gamers have for immersion, and the image they have about it, which change both their degree of loyalty and preservation regarding immersion's quality. An MMORPG vocabulary has been developing seriously, and it is now evident that communities are everything to this genre of entertainment. Today's gamers' degree of loyalty to immersion is extremely high once the game has been adopted.

To be adopted, the game first has to be seductive from the game design perspective. But then, immersion which first was sort of bypassed, comes forth and is the sparkle that can turn a nice game into a really cool one. "It is fun and the world is soooo cool !" - what we are all looking for (gamers included). It is only in this unique position that the gamers can use immersion not only to consume the game, but to influence it and, if you give them the necessary tools, even build it bigger, deeper and with an immense variety.

Most of us can't wait to see the day when true 3D immersion will come, when we won't be watching avatars on a screen, but really be standing in our game worlds. For now, gamers have to make the necessary efforts to bypass the weaknesses of today's immersion to enjoy the game. But since this comes as an evolution, there is nothing too unfair to that, and everybody is looking ahead - at least we get to pave the road.

We like to toss new things into the immersion of our games, every time possible to push immersion forward - because in the end it really gets noticed, and used. But it really seems that we will all have to earn the amazing "holodeck". If we want to get there faster, maybe we could use a powerful, flexible and well supported standard? How about open sourced libraries? ; )
Ca vaut pas une NL mais en temps de penuries on prend ce qu on trouve
